Qualcomm Enters IoT Partnership With STMicroelectronics, Completes Acquisition of Sequan’s 4G IoT Tech

Qualcomm Technologies QCOM -0.12%↓ and STMicroelectronics STM -2.15%↓ have partnered to pair STMicroelectronic’s STM32 microcontroller ecosystem and Qualcomm’s wireless connectivity solutions.  The partnership, which will target industrial and consumer IoT solutions, will first offer a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Thread combo system-on-a-chip (SoC) with ST’s microcontroller.

The wireless connectivity will augment the STM32 product, which have more than 100,000 global customers, said Remi El-Ouazzane, STMicroelectronics president of the Microcontrollers, Digital ICs and RF Products Group.  Initial product offerings are expected in the first quarter of 2025.

Qualcomm and STMicroelectronics will go after industrial IoT markets (Qualcomm).

The companies cited ABI Research about the magnitude of the market they are trying to grab:  “With the installed base of consumer, commercial and industrial connected devices expected to reach well over 80 billion units by 2028, the proliferation of high-performance wireless connectivity solutions combined with a diverse suite of microcontrollers will be fundamental in enabling this next wave of wireless IoT innovation,” said Andrew Zignani, ABI Research senior research director.

In other company news, Qualcomm has completed its acquisition of Sequan’s SQNS -3.54%↓ 4G IoT technology for $200 million.  Qualcomm said it expects to integrate the 4G IOT technologies into its portfolio of connectivity solutions designed for IOT.

The deal’s terms call for France-based Sequans to receive $185 million in cash, with $175 million coming at closing and as much as $10 million after a one-year warranty.  Sequans will retain its 5G IoT technology.
