Trimble Acquires Terasat Japan to Expand Real-Time VRS Positioning Footprint

Trimble TRMB 0.00%↑ has acquired Terasat Japan, expanding its global footprint for real-time, centimeter-level positioning services. The acquisition integrates Terasat’s established Virtual Reference Station (VRS) infrastructure network and regional customer base directly into Trimble’s positioning services portfolio. The strategic move aims to strengthen high-precision location coverage across Japan and the broader Asia-Pacific region, supporting growing demand across agriculture, construction, geospatial mapping, and autonomous systems.

Through the acquisition, Trimble enhances its ability to deliver high-accuracy GNSS correction services to enterprise clients operating in dense urban environments and challenging topographies across Japan. Terasat’s regional network infrastructure will be linked with Trimble’s existing positioning services—such as CenterPoint RTX and VRS Now—allowing field crews and automated machinery to achieve real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning without setting up local base stations. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Company executives noted that integrating Terasat’s ground-based reference stations improves service redundancy and signal reliability for critical high-precision applications. As industries rapidly adopt physical artificial intelligence, automated heavy equipment, and precise agricultural robotics, reliable centimeter-level positioning is becoming essential digital infrastructure, the company said. The expanded network will support both existing surveyors and emerging commercial users who require uninterrupted, high-integrity location data across variable terrain.

The expansion places Trimble in direct competition with major global positioning, surveying, and correction service providers expanding across the Asia-Pacific market. In the high-precision GNSS correction space, Trimble competes directly with Hexagon AB (and its Leica Geosystems Leica SmartNet network), Topcon Positioning Systems, and specialized correction network operators like Point One Navigation and Swift Navigation. Additionally, satellite-based augmentation competitors such as Fugro and Mitsubishi Electric’s CLAS (Centimeter Level Augmentation Service) present strong regional competition in Japan’s high-precision mapping and industrial markets.

Trimble plans to immediately initiate network optimization and technology integration efforts to ensure seamless service continuity for Terasat’s existing subscriber base. The transaction reinforces Trimble’s broader strategy of expanding software-defined, subscription-based recurring revenue while building out resilient positioning, navigation, and timing infrastructure worldwide. Existing customers will gain streamlined access to Trimble’s broader suite of hardware, cloud software, and connected site workflows, the company said.
