Instagram Launches Instagram Map, But Does It Act Like Snapchat’s Snap Map?

New Instagram Maps offers user location sharing and location-based content…

Meta’s META -1.42%↓ Instagram has launched its Instagram Map, which includes a suite of new features, including a user location-share and find location-based information such as event posts. The company says Instagram Map is an opt-in location tool embedded in direct messages that allows users to view friends’ most recent activity.

At least one publication believes that the new launch mirrors Snapchat’s SNAP -4.08%↓ Snap Map, which offers similar features. The main reason is it shows your last active location to selected friends—much like Snapchat’s Snap Map.

The platform also expanded the Friends tab in Reels globally, giving users visibility into their friends’ interactions such as likes, comments and reposts.

Instagram said users can choose to not share location in specific places or people at anytime. If a user chooses to use location sharing, their location is updated whenever they open the app or return to the app if it’s been running in the background.

Instragram’s new Instagram Maps (Meta).

Instagram Maps feature does not allow users to embed maps directly into their Instagram posts. Instead, it functions as an opt-in, in-app location-sharing tool, accessible via the Direct Messages (DM) section, that shows your last active location to selected friends—again, much like Snapchat’s Snap Map—but only when userws choose to enable it.

Even without sharing your own location, the company says users can explore location-based content—like stories, Reels, or posts—within the map interface, provided others have geotagged those posts.
