U-blox Explores Low Earth Orbit Signals to Augment Satellite Navigation

Thalwil, Switzerland-based u-blox has announced it is investigating how low Earth orbit signals can integrate with existing global navigation satellite systems to support mass-market positioning. The research follows the March launch of the European Space Agency’s first Celeste demonstration satellites, which are designed to provide increased signal strength and rapid satellite geometry changes.

LEO-based signals, from such sats as ESA’s Celeste, are emerging as a complementary layer to established GNSS (u-blox).

Under a co-funded ESA project, the company is evaluating how these emerging signals can improve performance in challenging conditions and increase the robustness of its X20 platform. Officials said the move represents a key step toward establishing a more resilient positioning ecosystem that combines traditional and new orbital data.
