Apple Maps Adds AI-Powered Flyover, Intelligent Local Lists and Improved Navigation Tools

Apple AAPL -4.18%↓ recently announced major updates to Apple Maps as part of its broader rollout of Apple Intelligence features, introducing more immersive exploration tools and smarter local recommendations.

The enhanced Flyover experience now uses advanced AI to deliver photorealistic 3D aerial views with significantly improved resolution, lighting and detail. Users can virtually fly over cities and landmarks with greater realism, including better rendering of buildings, terrain and points of interest. The feature also adds dynamic elements such as animated traffic flow and seasonal changes in select locations.

In Apple Maps, an enhanced Flyover experience for select cities around the world combines aerial imagery with AI (Apple).

Apple Maps is introducing Local Lists, an intelligent feature that automatically generates curated collections of nearby places based on context such as time of day, user preferences and trending activity. Examples include “Best Coffee Shops Open Now,” “Family-Friendly Spots Nearby,” or “Hidden Gems in the Neighborhood.” The lists integrate seamlessly with navigation and can be saved or shared.

Additional navigation improvements include more precise indoor mapping for major airports and shopping centers, expanded transit coverage with real-time updates, and enhanced Look Around street-level imagery in more cities. The updates emphasize privacy, with all intelligent features processed on-device where possible.

The new capabilities will roll out with the upcoming iOS 27iPadOS 27 and macOS releases this fall. Apple said the improvements are designed to make Maps an even more powerful daily tool for travelers, commuters and explorers while maintaining its focus on user privacy and data security.
