Google Maps Rolls Out AI-Powered ‘Ask Maps’ and Major Immersive Navigation Overhaul

Google earlier this month unveiled a significant update to Google Maps powered by its Gemini AI models, introducing a conversational “Ask Maps” feature for personalized location queries and a redesigned “Immersive Navigation” experience described as the biggest transformation to the app’s driving guidance in over a decade.

Ask Maps enables users to ask complex, real-world questions about places and receive tailored recommendations integrated directly into the map, turning plans into actionable steps with a natural conversational interface, according to a company blog authored by Miriam Daniel, Google Maps’ vice president and general manager.

Ask Maps lets you ask complex questions and get personalized recommendations with a map,” the blog post states. “Ask Maps is personalized to you, and lets you easily turn plans into action.”

The feature is rolling out now in the United States and India on Android and iOS devices.

Immersive Navigation provides a visual overhaul with 3D views of buildings, overpasses, terrain, lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights and stop signs to better match what drivers see on the road, along with intuitive real-time guidance, natural voice directions, Street View previews of upcoming segments, alternate route tradeoffs (such as tolls versus traffic), and helpful arrival details like parking and entrance information.

Immersive Navigation gives driving a visual overhaul with 3D views and clear guidance,” the announcement explains. “Immersive Navigation is our biggest transformation of the navigation experience in over a decade.”

Not everyone thinks the new features are really innovative…in fact, some believe they could overload users. “Google Maps is just copying Apple Maps. Also, what’s the point of a map that tries to recreate the real world?” an industry map veteran said. “What you need is a map that abstracts the important stuff and doesn’t distract the driver with skyscraper renderings etc — it just increases, rather than reduces, the cognitive load on the driver.”

Overall, the new maps features begin rolling out in the U.S. with expansion planned over the coming months to eligible Android and iOS devices, as well as CarPlayAndroid Auto and vehicles with Google built-in.

The updates build on earlier Gemini integrations in Google Maps, including navigation enhancements for walking and cycling announced in January 2026, aiming to make the app smarter, more intuitive and less stressful for users worldwide, the company said.
