Openreach has partnered with fleet telematics provider Geotab to enhance driver safety and advance its sustainability goals across its UK vehicle fleet. The telematics technology will offer real-time insights into vehicle diagnostics and driving behavior, supporting the telecommunications infrastructure company in managing the second-largest commercial fleet in the United Kingdom.

Geotab’s deal with Openreach is for 23,000 vehicles (Geotab).

Under the initial trial phase, volunteer engineers are testing Geotab’s connected vehicle platform in active operational environments. The technology captures real-time data on vehicle health, fuel consumption, and driver behavior, which is then fed directly to drivers through a mobile app. The initiative aims to reduce unplanned downtime by identifying maintenance needs early while helping engineers self-correct driving habits to cut down emissions and road risks.

The rollout follows collaboration between Openreach management and recognized labor unions, including the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Prospect. Following a successful trial phase, Openreach plans to deploy Geotab’s telematics across its full fleet of more than 23,000 commercial vans and company cars.

The agreement positions Geotab to strengthen its market footprint in the UK’s highly competitive fleet management and telematics sector. Geotab competes directly against other prominent telematics and fleet technology providers operating in the British market, including Samsara, Webfleet, Verizon Connect VZ -6.45%↓, Quartix, and Teletrac Navman.
