Rocket Lab to Acquire Iridium for $8 Billion, Gaining Advanced Satellite PNT Capabilities

Rocket Lab gains 2.55-million subscribers in IoT, PNT, safety of life markets…

Rocket Lab RKLB 0.00%↑ has agreed to acquire major location industry player Iridium Communications IRDM 0.00%↑ in an $8 billion deal that creates a vertically integrated space company with expanded launch, manufacturing and global connectivity services.

The transaction, where Rocket Lab will acquire all the outstanding shares of Iridium common stock for $54 per share in a cash and stock transaction, values Iridium at a significant premium and combines Rocket Lab’s small satellite launch vehicles and spacecraft expertise with Iridium’s extensive low- Earth orbit constellation. It is expected to close by mid-2027, subject to regulatory approvals and shareholder consent.

Rocket Lab becomes major location industry entity with Iridium acquisition (Rocket Lab).

Iridium brings decades of expertise in Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) technologies. Its L-band spectrum and satellite network deliver resilient, high-reliability signals that serve as a critical complement and backup to traditional GPS, particularly in remote, maritime, aviation and polar regions where GPS can be vulnerable to jamming or spoofing. Iridium’s architecture enables precise location services, timing synchronization and assured PNT even in contested or degraded environments.

The acquisition strengthens Rocket Lab’s ability to offer complete, end-to-end mission solutions for government, commercial and defense customers. Rocket Lab has increasingly marketed itself as a full-stack space systems provider — from Electron and Neutron rockets to spacecraft deployment and operations. Adding Iridium’s PNT and communications capabilities allows the company to deliver integrated platforms that combine launch services with robust, independent navigation and timing.

Both companies said the combination will accelerate innovation across the growing space economy, particularly in resilient satellite infrastructure and assured PNT services.

Other Rocket Lab and Iridium acquisition points:

  • It merges Rocket Lab’s launch capabilities and satellite manufacturing with Iridium’s global satellite communications network, spectrum, and 500-plus strong partner ecosystem.
  • Rocket Lab gains IoT, direct-to-device (D2D), PNT, and critical safety-of-life services to challenge competitors in the global telecom market.
  • While gaining Iridium’s 2.55-million active subscribers, Rocket Labs will build on the constellation to “scale into untapped markets and pioneer new space-based services to the benefit of global customers.”
  • Iridium has $871.7 million in annual revenue.
