NextNav Adds 128 Lower-900 MHz Licenses to Bolster Terrestrial Positioning Assets

NextNav NN -0.94%↓ said Thursday it has closed its agreement to acquire 128 active M-LMS A-block licenses from Telesaurus Holdings and Skybridge Spectrum Foundation, further strengthening its spectrum holdings in the Lower 900 MHz band. The acquisition, approved by the FCC on June 20, places the new assets in the same band as NextNav’s existing licenses, enhancing its ability to deliver terrestrial positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) services as a complement to GPS.

NextNav, which markets itself as the largest license holder in the band designated for terrestrial positioning, says the deal reinforces its operational leadership in next-generation 3D geolocation. The company sees the expanded spectrum as critical for scaling its Pinnacle and TerraPoiNT networks to support applications in public safety, GPS resilience, and urban location services.

Although financial terms were not disclosed, NextNav emphasized the strategic value of spectrum scarcity and long-term positioning infrastructure. The move comes as the company is under pressure to demonstrate commercial traction and justify continued investment in terrestrial PNT as GPS faces emerging vulnerabilities.

NextNav contends that its network is ready to augment GPS (NextNav).

In other company news, in a Sept. 5 ex parte meeting with the FCC, NextNav CEO Mariam Sorond and other company officials met with FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s staff to describe the public interest benefits and technical and economic analyses supporting its request for the Commission to enable 5G-based 3D Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (“PNT”) in the Lower 900 MHz band.  The company urged the FCC to “promptly issue a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (“NPRM”) consistent with its proposal.”
