Industry Groups Push U.S. Government for Rapid Action on GPS Jamming, Spoofing

A coalition of industry organizations urged the U.S. Defense and Transportation departments to launch a coordinated effort targeting GPS jamming and spoofing threats, warning that such interference poses risks to public safety, commerce and critical infrastructure.

The letter, among several recommendations, calls on federal agencies to accelerate the deployment of anti-jamming and authenticated signals in new satellites and ground systems, replace older satellites, , streamline certification of resilient GPS technologies, and incorporate counter-spoofing technologies in to the over all satellite positioning plan.

The letter was signed by the GPS Innovation Alliance, Aircraft Electronics Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l., Airlines for America, Alliance for Automotive Innovation, Aviation Spectrum Resources, Inc., Boat U.S., General Aviation Manufacturers Association, National Agricultural Aviation Association, National Air Transportation Association, National Business Aviation Association, Satellite Industry Association and U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In its own letter, the GPS Innovation Alliance recommended that the government take near-term actions that include “issuing public statements and conducting diplomatic activities to highlight actions of bad actors that are creating unnecessary risks to public safety and impeding commerce.” Other GPSIA recommedations include improving regulatory, standards, and certification processes; creating plans to enforce illegal marketing, sales, and operations of jammers and spoofers; and to deter bad actors.
