In what allows OEMs to test and integrate navigation systems, Mapbox has launched a cloud-based Virtual Head Unit (VHU) with Arm ARM 0.56%↑. The unit, which uses Arm-based in-vehicle hardware and Mapbox’s navigation stack, allows software-driven vehicles to get to market faster, the company said.
Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) were a big topic at the 2024 CES conference and will be again next month. With that, both companies plan to exhibit the new VHU at the large trade show.

“Arm’s new automotive virtual platforms allow Mapbox to deliver its 3D Live Navigation and Autopilot solutions to customers on next-gen Arm SoCs, with end-to-end simulation, validation, and optimization several quarters ahead of automakers building their first hardware racks or test vehicles,” said Cherie Wong, Mapbox senior vice president, Location Services, in a statement.
Mapbox developers initially can create and manage their VHUs directly within the Mapbox Console, the company said. The console integrates with such other tools as Mapbox Studio.
